Super Wolf Blood Moon.

Tonight, the moon passed through Earth’s shadow inΒ the only total lunar eclipse of 2019. The next total eclipse won’t happen until 2021, and we’ll have to wait until 2022 for a blood moon to be visible again from North America. A blood moon is when the moon goes into eclipse and turns blood red. Tonight’s total lunar eclipse also occurred while the moon was very near it’s closest point to Earth this month, making it a supermoon. And since January’s full moon is also known as a Wolf Moon, that’s led some people to call tonight’s lunar event…Β Super Blood Wolf Moon.

During a total eclipse, the moon passes so deep into the shadow that any light reaching its surface only comes from the edge of Earth, where sunrises and sunsets are taking place. That light falls on to the moon and turns it red. Tonight when the moon went into eclipse, it turned blood red. We could see the full moon just above the horizon on our way out to watch the conference championship football games…

And later, we snuck outside to try to get a peek at the Super Wolf Blood Moon…

It was too cold outside to break out the dSLR cameras, big lenses or tripod. I just used my Samsung Galaxy Note9 and my new Moment 60mm Tele lens…

I got this capture that I was pretty happy with…

I love lunar events like this and really anything to do with the moon. πŸ˜€πŸŒ•β€οΈ

Goodnight moon.

A full moon in October is known as the Hunter’s Moon. And tomorrow night there was supposed to be a 100% full October Hunter’s Moon. Fun facts from Space.com

The moon shows its full face to Earth once a month. Well, sort of.

In fact, the same side of the moon always faces the planet, but part of it is in shadow. And, in reality most of the time the “full moon” is never perfectly full. Only when the moon, Earth and the sun are perfectly aligned is the moon 100 percent full, and that alignment produces aΒ lunar eclipse. And sometimes β€” once in aΒ blue moonΒ β€” the moon is full twice in a month (or four times in a season, depending on which definition you prefer). [The Moon: 10 Surprising Facts]

I was really excited about tomorrow’s night 100% full moon. I get excited about silly things like that. When we were walking the dogs this evening, the moon was just starting to rise above the horizon…

It’s hard to get steady photos when the dog you’re walking is pulling you along…

These are the only photos I took of the Hunter’s Moon. I meant to take more but I ended up falling asleep pretty early. I wasn’t too upset because tonight the moon was 99% full. Tomorrow night will be the 100% full Hunter’s Moon.Β πŸ˜€πŸŒ•β€οΈ

UPDATE: It was so overcast on Wednesday that we couldn’t even see the 100% full Hunter’s Moon. And that’s a bummer.
