Everything is still feeling really good with my new hips. It’s pretty bonkers that it’s been over two years since I had my first hip replaced. It’s also pretty bonkers that all that hardware is in my body. 😀🏥❤️

Early yesterday morning, we drove back over to The Christ Hospital in Mount Auburn for my second hip surgery. Today, I was scheduled for a total left hip replacement…
The prep for the surgery went very smooth and very quickly. The actual surgery seemed to be over in a snap of the fingers, and just like that next thing I knew, I was in post-op chomping on pieces of ice, and not long after that, I was up in the recovery room where Genfier was already waiting for me…
We could see downtown Cincinnati again from the big window in our room…
Genifer got me this awesome blue bear in the gift shop…
She said she wanted to get something that said the Christ Hospital on it. But they really didn’t have anything like that. This guy was about the closest thing she could find. But every time I see him, I’ll think of my surgeries. We hung out together all afternoon into the evening in our recovery room. We had some room service while we watched most of the Reds game on TV together before she left to go home to let Mack out of his crate. Oscar was staying with Genifer’s mom for the weekend. After the Reds lost to the Brewers, I could kind of almost see the Reds Friday Night Fireworks from our recovery room above my red bag on the sofa…
After the fireworks, I laid down to try to get some rest. But it’s really hard to get a lot of rest in a hospital because people keep coming in and poking and prodding you. I took a photo out the window every time someone came into the room and woke me up…
And I was pretty much awake at this point…
I met with a physical therapist at 7:30am who had me walking up and down the hallways with a walker…
After meeting with a physical therapist, I ordered us some breakfast…
Genifer brought us coffees from Sidewinder. We started watching the France versus Argentina Round of 16 World Cup match. When I left to meet with another physical therapist, France was up 2-1. When I got back to our room after walking some stairs and walking up and down the hallway on crutches, this is the score I saw…
By 12:30, we were in the car and on our way to Walgreens to fill my prescriptions. Then I was home resting comfortably in bed with my new friend. “You’re my boy, blue!“
When we got home, we laid around and watched Uruguay knock Portugal out of the World Cup and then a thriller of an MLS match between Seattle and Portland before missing just our second home FC Cincinnati match ever, But we got to watch the FC|C match on TV. And they won, 2-0! My first day of recovering from hip replacement surgery hasn’t been that bad at all. So far so good. I hope the rest of this recovery is as smooth and relatively pain-free as today has been. Fingers crossed. And once again, I can’t really say enough about The Christ Hospital. The doctors and all the staff were just incredible. Everyone was so extraordinarily nice, so helpful and went out of their way to make sure I was always as comfortable as possible and that had everything I needed during my brief stay. It’ll be amazing once my physical therapy is complete and I’m back to 100% with no more hip pain. I don’t even know that I can fully fathom what that would be like. But I bet it’ll be pretty incredible. It’s been a very long time coming.

This afternoon I had my pre-operation physical and blood work done for my next surgery on Friday. They said that everything looked good. I can’t say that I’m looking forward to this but it’ll be good once it’s behind us. 😶🏥❤️

Today was my final session physical therapy for my right hip…
The physical therapy has made such a huge difference. My hip feels so much better than it has in a really long time. And the best part is my hip doesn’t hurt anymore. I can’t wait to start the process all over again with my left hip. 😀🏥❤️

This afternoon I had my six-week post-operation checkup…
It’s pretty crazy to think that it’s already been six weeks since my hip surgery…
They took a couple of x-rays of my new hip. My doctor said that everything looked great on the x-rays. And he said that it looked like I was walking very well with my new hip. Everyone at The Christ Hospital did such an amazing job with this entire procedure. It’s incredible to think that just six weeks after my surgery, I’m walking unassisted without crutches or a cane and without any pain. I’m not going to post photos of the x-rays in this blog post but you can see them here, here, and both of them here. They’re not gross or anything but I know some people might be squeamish about that sort of thing. And that’s okay. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about seeing them. But I was kind of in awe of them. Looking at the x-rays, it’s just pretty crazy to think that piece of hardware is inside of me along with one very sizeable screw. And what really struck me after looking at the x-rays is that the whole thing didn’t hurt more. You’d think there would have been some amount of rather horrific pain afterwards. But that wasn’t the case at all. There was very little pain after my surgery and throughout the entire recovery process. I hope everything goes just as smoothly with my next hip surgery because this one wasn’t really that bad at all.
Next week, I have my last two sessions of physical therapy and then I’m done with everything for a few months until I have my other hip replaced at the end of June, physical therapy in July and I’ll be good as new by August. 😀🏥❤️

After my hip replacement surgery, I spent all of February walking with crutches. At the beginning of March, I progressed to walking with a cane. This morning I walked from our office on Eighth Street to get my haircut on Fourth Street, and I deliberately left my cane at the office when I left for my appointment…
I walked to my haircut and back to the office without any problems or any pain. It was a pretty amazing feeling to walk across downtown again without help, without a limp and without any pain. It was a very proud moment for me. Today marks the day that after about three years, my hip felt normal again. That’s been a long time coming. 😀🏥👍❤️

This morning we went to The Christ Hospital in Mount Auburn for my first hip surgery…
I was scheduled for a total right hip replacement. Over the last few years, I was dealing with a condition called Avascular Necrosis. It is a condition that occurs when there is a lack of blood to bone. Because bone is living tissue that requires blood, a lack of blood causes the bone to die. Eventually, the blood-deprived bone becomes brittle and starts to suffer microfractures. When not diagnosed and treated, this process eventually causes the bone to collapse. And that’s what happened to me back in the middle of December 2016. At first, it started out as just occasional hip pain when I would walk longer distances. I didn’t think much about it because the pain would come and go, and would occasionally switch hips. As time went on, the pain became more constant. The condition progressed and finally, the top of my femur collapsed one night at home. It was one of the most severe pains I think I’ve ever felt. The time between the first symptoms and collapse of my hip was more than two and a half years. After my hip collapsed, the pain gradually became more bearable and I found I could still hobble around on a painful right hip. I met with specialists to get the condition diagnosed and discuss treatment options. At this point, because the hip had already collapsed, the only treatment option was a total hip replacement. I made the decision to try to limp through all the fun activities of the summer in Cincinnati. And once the soccer and baseball seasons were over, I made my appointment with the highly recommended orthopedic surgeon, Dr Patrick Kirk at The Christ Hospital to have my right hip replaced. Dr Kirk’s office books appointments on average four months in advance. When I made my appointment, it felt so far in the future that the day might never actually arrive. And I was fine with that because the idea of having a total hip replacement surgery was really terrifying. But I watched the day get closer and closer on the calendar. And today, the day of my surgery was finally here…
Needless to say, I was very nervous and apprehensive about the surgery and what kind of discomfort I would be in afterwards. But after the surgery, I found myself to be good spirits, relieved to have the surgery behind me and happy to have a cup of ice chips…
I was even happier when we got to the recovery room…
It meant the worst part was behind us and now it was just focusing on getting better…

Genifer stayed with me by my side all day and finally left late on Friday night to tend to Oscar, who had been at some by himself since very early in the morning. After Genifer left, I watched the Opening Ceremonies of the Winter Olympics and tried to get some rest. When I woke up on Saturday morning, I was really surprised with how good I felt and how little discomfort I was experiencing…
And I got to watch the North London Derby this morning from my recovery room…
Arsenal lost 1-0. It looked like it was starting to get really foggy outside…
The room I was recovering in after surgery was as nice as a lot of hotel rooms…
And the hospital food was surprisingly good too. I had a grilled cheese and a chef salad and some blueberry pancakes while I was in recovery. Genifer had a veggie wrap with hummus that was just out of this world good. After meeting with physical therapists early Saturday afternoon, I was discharged and it was time to go home to recover…
I can’t really say enough about The Christ Hospital. The doctors and all the staff were incredible. Everyone was so extraordinarily nice, so helpful and went out of their way to make sure I was always as comfortable as possible and had everything I needed. It makes the knowledge that I’m going to have to go through all this again with my left hip in the next few months not quite as nerve-racking and terrifying. And once both hips have been replaced and fully recovered, I can’t wait to get back to living life to the fullest with my beautiful wife I feel like we’ve been very hampered by my injuries for quite a while now. Maybe we can finally add another dog to our family or maybe another little addition to our family. 😀🏥❤️
